]]>The Wild Trout Trust Conservation Awards, supported by Thames Water and the River Restoration Centre, seek to recognise and encourage excellence in wild trout habitat management and conservation and celebrate the efforts, ingenuity and imagination of all those involved.
The awards ceremony and announcement of winners was held at the Savile Club in London on 19 October 2016.
The competition was open to entry from individuals or organisations and amateurs or professionals across Britain and Ireland.

Newbury Sewage Protest Event

]]>The protest was held at Victoria Park in Newbury on 14 April 2024.
Politicians addressing the gathered crowd of over 250 people included Baroness Jenny Jones, Green; Laura Farris – MP for Newbury, Conservative; Lee Dillon – Head of West Berkshire Council, LibDem; and Olivia Bailey – candidate for Reading West & Mid Berkshire, Labour.
The event was held by a coalition of concerned groups and individuals, led by the Kennet Catchment River Keepers Association (KCRA), and supported by the Angling Trust, Action for the River Kennet (ARK), residents, and angling clubs from Reading to Newbury. This united front against Thames Water’s negligence called for immediate and decisive action to protect these unique chalk streams and local communities (from Angling Trust website)

]]>Sir David Attenborough launched London Wildlife Trust's new flagship nature reserve, Woodberry Wetlands on 30 April 2016. Located at Stoke Newington, east London, the 11 hectare reserve was formerly a Thames Water reservoir.

Thames Tideway Tunnel Contract

]]>Thames Water has selected a preferred bidder to deliver the £4.2bn Thames Tideway Tunnel, also known as the ‘super sewer’.
The event took place on 13 July 2015 at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. The newly-created, special purpose company Bazalgette Tunnel Limited, whose shareholders are a consortium of investors comprising funds managed by Allianz, Amber Infrastructure Group, Dalmore Capital Limited and DIF, is in line to own, finance and deliver the landmark project.
Along with the recently completed upgrade of five sewage treatment works on the tidal Thames (including at Beckton, East London), both the Lee Tunnel and the Thames Tideway Tunnel are needed to stem the 39 million tonnes of untreated sewage that overflow into the tidal river in a typical year from the capital’s overstretched, Victorian sewerage network.
The tunnel will stretch 25 km (15 miles), largely beneath the bed of the River Thames, from Acton in the west to Abbey Mills near Stratford in the east. There it will join up with the Lee Tunnel, currently under construction by Thames Water.

Big Wet Wipe Count 2017

]]>Here's a short video I made for Thames21 -We reconnect people to nature by helping them enjoy, protect and enhance their local rivers. The video shows a survey carried out by Thames21 volunteers to count the number of wet wipes found on the Thames foreshore at Hammersmith on one day in April 2017.

The survey's findings reveal that the Thames has the highest concentration of wet wipes ever recorded in Britain – with 277 found in just one square metre.
Over 4,500 wet wipes were found on one 154m sq patch of foreshore at the latest Thames River Watch citizen science event, the biannual Big Count: the highest number ever found in one place.
It’s likely that these figures are just the tip of the iceberg as the densities of wet wipes increased with distance from the shore.
